What are ball bearing shims?

Ball bearing shims are thin annular spacers placed adjacent to ball bearings to set axial clearance, control preload, and compensate for tolerance stack-up in rotating assemblies. Correctly fitted ball bearing shims reduce vibration, extend bearing service life, and ensure smooth, reliable operation. M-Tech®L ball bearing shims are made from corrosion-resistant brass, formed into fully coated laminated rings. Each ring consists of multiple thin metal films of 0.05 mm thickness bonded together. Brass is selected for its corrosion resistance, good peelability, and suitability for sealing applications where metallic contamination from loose foils must be avoided.

Each M-Tech®L ball bearing shim is made up of multiple bonded brass layers. To reduce the total thickness, individual layers are peeled away using a M-Tech® Peeling File. This allows precise on-site adjustment in 0.05 mm and 0.075 mm increments without remachining or replacing the shim entirely.

M-Tech®L ball bearing shims allow thickness adjustments in 0.05 mm and 0.075 mm increments, depending on the variant selected. This fine-graded adjustment capability makes them suitable for applications where bearing clearance must be set with high repeatability.

Compared to loose brass foils, M-Tech®L ball bearing shims are easier to handle, less likely to cause contamination in lubricated assemblies, and offer more consistent thickness control. Their laminated, fully coated construction keeps all layers together as a single unit until a layer is intentionally removed, reducing the risk of foil fragments entering the bearing assembly.
